Editing: the commercial

I tried to edit today. Previously, I dumped all the footage from the camera to the computer. I did this by plugging the SD card reader into the computer. Then all of the clips into a file on the computer. I named the file Nike Commercial. So I figured since this was done and there was no complications that all the footage would be there. But I was very wrong. I had another group mate log into the computer. Immediately there was a problem with the computer. I brought up pinnacle studios. As soon as the groupmate logged in the computer it didn’t have the footage on it. I started to panic because I only have an hour and ten minutes to finish everything. I had to sign out the SD card reader again. I realized that I might have dumped the footage wrong. I took the sheet the group used to sign out the equipment Friday and got an SD card reader and the SD card. I looked in my backpack to see if I could find my notes on how to properly dump the footage thinking that I dumped it wrong. But I had no luck because I left my other book at home. I clicked on some files hoping that they were the groups. I waited for the computer to load the footage. It ended up bringing up someone else’s footage. It was footage that was an example of an already existing little movie or commercial. So it was safe to delete it, which my group mate did. I went into another file that was on the computer and found our footage. My teacher told us to move all of our footage to a flash drive or google drive. I asked the group what we were gonna move the footage to and decided to move it to google drive. I had to start editing now. The computers are extremely slow so it was a hassle. I wanted to start seeing the footage but the computer said it was analyzing something to please wait. This process took about 5 minutes then it exited out of the app. When I clicked on it to open it again thinking that it reset, the computer asked if Pinnacle Studios could make changes to the computer and needed a password and username. So that lead me to be stuck. At this point we were running out of class time and just exported all of our existing footage to google docs to make sure it didn’t get deleted.

Filming blog

Today we started filming. I first signed out all of our equipment on a sign out sheet that we have to use every single time we sign an SD card or any other camera equipment out. I had to change into my clothing piece which was a Nike shirt because I wasn’t wearing it already. Everyone else was already wearing their props however. I had it outside once we had all of our equipment in order.  The first place we went to film was the softball field. I suggested that we should go to originally film on the track but everyone was at the track so we decided it would just be better if the scene was filmed on the baseball field becase it was a less crowded location. I had a difficult time because the grass on the softball field was wet but besides that we took about eight different shots of one of the group members walking around the camera. I tried her walking in a circle.I also tried her walking away from the camera and running. Our next location was at a crop circle at our school. I tried different techniques as to how we wanted to set the camera up whether or not it would be on the tripod or hand held. I had one of our group members walking with only the shorts in the shot and just move the tripod as he was walking. But I also suggested trying to hold the camera by hand and have him walk toward it. I took a few shots of both and kept moving. Our next location was outside of the cafeteria. Three of our members stood  on the top of some stairs that were near the cafeteria so we could make sure we get a higher angle of the shot. I  tried a few different activities that I could do while the shot was going on. For example I tried studying.  So I took out one of my binders and pretend that I was looking at notes. And i also decided to bring another one of our group members in and pretended like we were talking. Our next location  was the stairs in front of the media center. It was difficult making sure we were getting a low angle of the backpack. I first tried it on the tripod but we thought that it wasn’t low enough so we tried handheld. I took seven or eight shots of this then went to the senior patio. This was our last shot and we were confused on what position we should be for it. We all knew that we were going to show our Nike tire in the shot but we weren’t sure if we were going to sit down or stand up. I suggested  that we should take a few shots of both. So i took about three or four shots of us standing up with our props on. And we all also took a few shots of us sitting on one of the cafeteria tables. I had a difficult time with timing the camera. So one of the members hit play on the camera and just walked over to the rest of us and continue the shot. So when I start editing I will have to edit this out.

Storyboard Blog

First Scene-
During this scene we will be filming the Nike shoes, specifically White Air-forces, for the commercial. The shot will be an extreme close up, and will be tracking the subject. The location for the shot is on the track as well. We wanted to include an aspect of athletics since Nike is mostly athletic apparel.

Second Scene-
The next scene we wanted to include for our commercial is someone walking with Nike shorts. The location for the scene is on the patio outside of the media center, as we wanted to create a social setting. Casual clothing is another major part of Nike’s brand and we wanted to make sure to incorporate that into our commercial. This shot is going to be a medium long shot.

Third Scene-
The third scene we wanted to include in our commercial was someone outside of the cafeteria at our school in a Nike shirt. This would be a medium shot.

Fourth Scene-
The fourth scene will be an actor going up the stairs with a Nike backpack. This scene will include a low angle wide shot. We specifically choose to include a backpack as most kids need one for school and we would be filming at our school.

Fifth Scene-
The fifth scene for our commercial will be all of the Nike apparel combined into once scene. This scene will take place on the senior patio and will include a tilt and will be a wide shot. We want to include every actor, the setting, and the Nike apparel all in this one scene.

Sixth Scene-
The sixth scene will be a black background with a Nike logo. Then a slogan such as “Just do it” or “Preparing student for education and athletics” will fade in.

*Each scene will last about 5 seconds and will have music in the background

Editing Lesson Blog

                                   Editing Lesson Blog

Today we went over the policies and procedures on the camera equipment. We have to make sure to fill out a policy form every time we use a camera as well as write the numbers of the camera, tripod, and SD card reader on the sheet. We have to make sure to sign out the SD card reader on a separate sheet of paper too. We were showed what comes with the camera for example the USB cord and other ways we should import our takes just to make sure we don’t lose our footage. We learned how to use the camera. Our teacher first showed us how to turn on the camera and where the charger goes. She explained how the camera can be a little temperamental because it won’t charge if the camera is open. We also learned how and wear to insert the SD card into the camera with what way to put it. How to use the tripod was shown. We have to extend the legs by a clip. To attach the camera to the tripod you have to take a little platform off the top of it then snap it onto the bottom of the camera. Then tighten it on from underneath and snap it on the actual tripod. It can get taller by twisting a knob on the side of it to get higher angle shots.

We also learned a lot about how to edit our footage. The cottage that we edit is called raw footage cause we haven’t done anything with it yet. First we were shown where to edit our footage which is Pinnacle Studios. We have to make sure that we make a folder on our desktop and move our footage from the SD card to the folder.  Moving footage from the camera to the computer is called dumping. We have to make sure that we don’t leave the footage on the SD card because someone else that has the camera next might delete it.  If we had a problem finding our footage in the regular files then we had to switch to the private files. It’s AVCHD then stream. When wanting to put all files into a folder on the desktop you drag the mouse across all the files and drag them to the folder.  Importing is moving footage from the desktop to Pinnacle Pro which is what I just explained.

Once everything is imported and dumped the editing begins. When we want to start editing we highlight all of the takes and place them in the box at the bottom in pinnacle studios. When we want to delete a part of the take we click the razor blade slightly above highlight the scene then click delete. For example, if we have a video of the take going on and you can see people moving in the background at the end of the clip then you would delete that part.  If we made a mistake while were editing we would click edit menu at the top left-hand corner and then click undo. If we wanted to add text over the take then we would click the ”T” while the text is in the top layer of the box on the bottom then type what we wanted to say. After we’re done we would drag the text on top of the scene that we wanted it to be shown on and play the scene. If we wanted  to make the text fancier for example make it look like it’s being flown in we would go to motions and then add in affect from there.  If there is a mistake with the audio for example someone is laughing in the scene, We would write click on the scene go to detach audio then hit delete. When we want to insert music we would have to change it to an MP3 in order to get it to format onto Pinnacle Pro.

Planning Blog for Nike Commercial

                   Planning Blog for Nike Commercial

As we have previously learned planning is an important part of the film making industry and process. Today we learned we would be planning our commercial for example the costumes, scenes, settings, and schedule. It is important that we commercial so that we can save time. Working out our shots and scenes in advance will ensure we are able to get everything done the day we have to film. Planning can also save money. For the commercial we need some props and filming equipment, which if we plan out what we need, will save time. Lastly, planning the scenes out won’t cause confusion during the filming process. Planning will allow for all the actors to know what they are doing and when to do it. Overall, planning as many advantages and a good plan for our commercial will save us time and money as well as  prevent confusion.

Props- Were going to be using Nike apparel for the commercial. Specifically, we will be using Nike shoes, Nike shorts, a Nike shirt, and a Nike backpack.

Costumes- The costumes for the commercial will nothing intentional except for the Nike apparel. As this commercial is focused on education and taking place at our school, actors will be wearing day to day wear and the Nike apparel. For example, the actor wearing the Nike shorts will wear a non-branded shirt as well as shoes. The same goes for the person wearing the Nike shirt, they will try and wear other non branded clothing.

Schedule-
10/7- We decided the topic for our commercial. This ended up being a Nike commercial, focused on how their apparel is worn at school. We researched about the brand as well as how other Nike commercials were portrayed and filmed. We also blogged about the process.

10/10- Were planning our commercial today. We will discuss how planning will help us in the long run as well as the props well use, costumes well wear, our schedule, locations, and a backup plan. We will also blog about the process (this blog).

10/14- On this day we'll storyboard. Were going to map out the steps we're going to take to produce the scenes. This will save time, money and prevent confusion during the filing process.

10/21- On this day we will film the commercial. The plan is to stick to the storyboard in order to complete the filming and to move on to the editing process. A person will be filming an actor wearing apparel while the others direct the actor to what they have to do. We will also post an individual blog going over what we did.

10/23- On this day we’re going to edit our commercial. We will put all the footage we have into Premiere Pro and edit.

Locations-
Nike Shoes- On school track
Nike Backpack- Going up the media center stairs.
Nike Shorts- The patio outside of the media center aka the “Crop Circles”
Nike Shirt- Outside of Cafeteria

Backup Plan- It is important to have a backup plan for filming process because we only have on day to film. As such, every location that’s outside and could have exposure to rain will be moved to a place with an overhang. For example, the track scene with the Nike shoes, will be moved to the bus loop as if they were jogging out to practice. We want to keep the idea of excessive associated with our commercial. Also, the cafeteria scene would be moved to the senior patio because we want to keep the idea of school and social interaction in the scene. Lastly, if one of our actors is absent and doesn't have the prop with them, we will find someone who in our media studies class with a piece of Nike apparel on to fill the scene.

Research Conventions and Codes

                         Research Conventions and Codes

Today is October 7th, 2019 and today we had to decide the topic for our commercial. The commercial is one of our first projects of the school year and there is a lot criteria we have to meet. For example the commercial has to be 25-30 seconds long, the typical length of an ordinary commercial. Additionally, we learned the commercial would be due October 28th at 11:59pm and emailed to our class email. Lastly we had to pick from a certain set of topics including Nike, Starbucks, Dublin Donuts, etc. Other forms of topics included anti vaping commercials for the county or commercials for our school such as the programs offered there. After much deliberation, our group decided to do a commercial on Nike. We wanted to include various clothing items that kids wear in their day to day school lives.

As previously stated, our group choose to create a Nike commercial for our first project. However this didn’t go without much debate. A pro to doing a Nike commercial is it’s a company everyone is familiarized with. Nike being such a large company, everyone in this day and age has hard of them company and likely has a price of apparel from them. Leading into my next point, props will be easy to find for the commercial. Asking around our group, we found that everyone had at least one piece of Nike apparel they could model for the commercial. Lastly, the group as a whole liked the brand image Nike presents. Nike supports education, equality, youth athletics and other various topics through the selling of their apparel.

Fairly early on in class we had made the division to do Nike as our commercial, so we had extra time to begin planning our commercial. First of all, we researched current Nike commercials and developed an understanding of how they were filmed or produced. Secondly, the group created an idea for how to film the commercial which is to film individual pieces of apparel. The first clip would be someone walking with Nike shoes. The second clip would be someone walking with Nike shorts or pants. The third clip would be someone walking with a Nike shirt. The fourth clip would be someone walking with a Nike backpack. Finally, the last clip would be us  all walking together with the Nike apparel which would then fade to a Nike logo and a closing statement. After creating a brief idea, we then assigned each individual with finding the Nike price they would be wearing.

Introduction Blog

                                            Introductory

Hello, I'm Madison and this is my blog. I go to Fort Lauderdale High School; one of thee best schools in Broward County that has an excellent academic program. I'm currently in 11th grade and so far it hasn't been a "walk in the park". This school year I am tackling four AICE classes as well as one AP. I know to some my schedule would be average but for me it's a big task to take on. Balancing school with work can be difficult but when adding social opportunities into the mix it can be especially hard.
But, I know in the end it will pay off so I'm pushing till I make it. I haven't decided what I wanna do yet in life. I have heard some people spiel their whole life plan and I'm always so stumped by it. I always think to myself, "how do these people know what they wanna do for the rest of their lives?" That's for me to figure out though, and I know that will take some time. I couldn't have made it this far without my family though. I have one sister her name is Chloe. Shes 13 and just recently died her hair purple, so i guess you could say she's a rock star. Then three step siblings which are Brent, Sarah, and Tanner. Brent isn't around that much but whenever he hears that my stepdad is making ribs he is at our house in under a minute. Sarah lives with her mom in Sebring so she comes down whenever she can. She is one of the most mindful and caring people I have ever met, I'm glad to call her my step sister. Last is Tanner, he also lives with his mom in Sebring. He's 12 and like many other tweens, doesn't seem to be able to move from the Xbox. I'm the middle child out of the five of us. I'm 16 and am soon gonna be 17 in February. One year closer to being and adult! I know I know, whoever is reading this that's an adult is probably like, " Oh no honey, wait till those bills come flooding in." You see, it's not the responsibilities I'm looking forward to necessarily, but more the title. I could finally make my sister listen to me by simply saying, " You're right I'm not your mom but I am an adult and mom said you have to always respect adults." Simple as that. Anyway, every since I was young I was interested in fashion. For Christmas I would ask for those fashion books that you can draw outfits on the models with stencils. As I grew I got more interested in it. On my 14th birthday I got my very own sewing machine. YouTube became my best friend and taught me almost everything I know about sewing. I always found it so fascinating how one could wear or customize certain things to make it completely your own and really express who you are at the same time. I hope you enjoyed learning about me!
